Scientists help the fleet

Recently, the business ties of shipping companies with scientific and educational organizations of the Ministry of the Navy have significantly strengthened.

The Management of the Black Sea Shipping Company appealed to the teachers of the Department of Ship power Plants of the Odessa Institute of Marine Engineers with a request to find a way to fight with the help of ultrasound with the appearance of scale. Currently, the development of the design of the device is being completed, which makes it possible to refuse to descale manually.

In the laboratory of the department under the guidance of the Candidate of Technical Sciences Assoc. Akselband ultrasonic devices are being created, with the help of which it will be possible to deal with fouling of the hull of the vessel. Specialists of the Black Sea Shipping Company — assoc. are actively involved in this matter. Ermoshkin, engineers Parkhonyuk, Cherkasov, etc.

At the Department of Theory of Mechanisms and Machine Parts of the Institute, on the instructions of the Leningrad Metallurgical Plant named after S. M. Kirov, they studied the operation of ship engines during a storm. These data were required by the plant for the design of automation of ship installations. The research took place in various atmospheric conditions, with storms from 0 to 8 points on the ships "Lensovet" and "Sergey Botkin" during voyages in the Black and Mediterranean Seas, as well as in the Indian Ocean. The results of these studies were transferred to the Kirov plant, where the installation has already been manufactured, where the regulators are being tested.

The staff of the Baltic Shipping Company, in close cooperation with scientists from the Central Research Institute of the Navy and the Leningrad Higher Naval Engineering School named after Admiral Makarov, has done valuable work to improve the technical operation of ship power plants and increase the knowledge of sailors. Especially great help to seafarers is provided by Prof. Tanatar, candidates of technical Sciences Akimov, Ermilov from the college named after him. Makarov, Syromyatnikov, Vinogradov from TSNIIMFA, etc.

Six months ago, the Baltic Shipping Company's fleet included the Andijan motor ship, the lead of a new series of ships being built by order of the Soviet Union at the shipyards of the German Democratic Republic. To check the running properties of the ship and the operation of its mechanisms, a group of TSNIIMFA researchers, consisting of tt mechanical engineers, left for Andijan. Vinogradov and Khromykh, engineer-electrician T. Panov and instrument specialist T. Soldatov. Representatives of the Institute will study the operating modes of diesel engines and the ship's electric propulsion system. Their conclusions and suggestions of the ship's crew will be useful in correcting the projects of ships under construction in this series.
