Texas Single Plate Bills Die as Legislature Adjourns

Legislation (H.B. 2149/S.B. 805) that would have required the issuance of only a single, rear-mounted license plate for all passenger cars and light trucks failed to pass before the Texas legislature adjourned for 2019. Under current law such vehicles must display two license plates. Both bills were awaiting consideration in their respective Transportation Committees.

If passed, H.B. 2149 and S.B. 805 would have protected the aesthetic contours of cars, relieved vehicle owners of the burden of having to create mounting holes on bumpers, and brought Texas in-line with other states that have moved to a single plate requirement.

Thank you to everyone who voiced support for this legislation!
