Nevada Bill to Restrict Classic Vehicle Registration to be Amended; Hearing Scheduled for April 9, 2015 at 3:15 p.m.

Legislation (A.B. 326) to drastically alter the requirements for vehicles eligible for registration as a “classic vehicle” will be amended today in the Nevada Transportation Committee.  Under the amendment, only vehicles manufactured prior to 1996 would be eligible for a classic vehicle registration.   Currently, vehicles 25-years old and older are eligible.  The amendment also deletes provisions requiring that owners provide proof satisfactory to the state that the vehicle is driven solely for personal use and not more than 5,000 miles during an annual registration period. The provision requiring the owner to have another passenger car or motorcycle registered during the entire registration period is also deleted.  We do not believe that this amendment serves to protect the hobby, now or in the future!

We Urge You to Call Members of the Nevada Assembly Transportation Committee (List Attached Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to the Amended A.B. 326

  • Existing law already imposes restrictions on classic vehicles.  These cars are already used primarily club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades and occasional pleasure driving.

  • The amended A.B. 326 would deny future classics (1996 and newer) from ever being able to attain classic vehicle registration status and the existing benefits, including the special license plate, lesser fees and exemptions.

  • A.B. 326 ignores the fact that these hobby cars in Nevada constitute a small portion of the vehicle fleet and are already well-maintained and infrequently operated.  In fact, classic vehicles currently constitute less than 1.6 % of the total vehicle population in Nevada!

DON’T DELAY!  Please contact members of the Nevada Assembly Transportation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their opposition to the amendment to A.B. 326.  Phone calls are best!  Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org.  Also, please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts.  Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby! Thank you for your assistance.
