Michigan Bill to Expand Use of Historic Vehicles Approved by House; Moves to Governor for Signature

Legislation (S.B. 1146) that would amend the state’s current law governing historic motor vehicles to permit their unlimited use as “exhibition” vehicles the entire month of August was passed by the Michigan House of Representatives on a 109 to 1 vote.   Having already been approved by the full Senate, the bill now moves to the governor for his signature and enactment into law.  Under current Michigan law, use of historic vehicles is limited to participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and similar uses, including mechanical testing, but not for general transportation.

We Urge You to Contact Governor Rick Snyder (Contact Info Below) to Request His Support of S.B. 1146

  • S.B. 1146 will provide Michigan historic vehicle owners the opportunity to enjoy recreational driving in the month of August in addition to the other sanctioned uses.

  • S.B. 1146 provides added incentive to owners of qualifying historic vehicles (more than 25-years old) to register as “historic.”

  • S.B. 1146 acknowledges the immeasurable time, money and effort automotive hobbyists, especially historic vehicle owners, invest in their cars.

  • S.B. 1146 recognizes that many historic vehicles are insured under policies that already limit their use, require regular use vehicles for each household member with a driver’s license, and are required to be stored in a locked and enclosed garage.

Please contact Governor Rick Snyder immediately by phone, fax or e-mail to request his support of S.B. 1146.   Also, please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts.  Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby! Thank you for your assistance.
