Hawaii Resolutions Urge Low-Mileage Registration Credit

Resolutions (H.R. 158/H.C.R. 204) have been introduced in the Hawaii House of Representatives urging the City and County of Honolulu to create a 10% vehicle registration credit for residents who drive limited miles in their vehicles, like rarely used hobby cars.  The resolutions were introduced by Representative George Fontaine to offset the burden put on certain vehicle owners by increased registration fees.  Under the resolutions, the credit would extend to any resident who is registering their vehicle and can provide their two most recent safety inspections (at least 11 months apart) showing that less than 3,000 miles were driven between the two inspections.

We Urge You to Contact Members of the Hawaii House Transportation Committee (Contact Info Below) Immediately to Request Support for H.R. 158 and H.C.R. 204

  • H.R. 158/H.C.R. 204 recognize that the City and County of Honolulu base the majority of its vehicle registration fees on vehicle weight rather than miles driven.

  • H.R. 158/H.C.R. 204 acknowledge that most of the vehicle registration fees are spent on road repair and maintenance and that the cost of vehicle registration should be borne primarily by those who use the roads with greater frequency.

  • H.R. 158/H.C.R. 204 urge the City and County of Honolulu to correct the unfairness associated with having those residents who make less use of our roads contribute the same amount in fees.

DON’T DELAY!  Please contact members of the Hawaii House Transportation Committee immediately to request their support for H.R. 158 and H.C.R. 204.  Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org.
